But Why?

As I've talked about in previous posts, I love my dogs. However, they can seriously test my patience sometimes.  Based on the bark collar post, you should all know that Neeko's barking drives me crazy, but Miss Sophie has a different trick.  She enjoys chewing things.

So this post is dedicated to Sophie and a list of things she has chewed / ruined.

Armrest of the couch.  Which has been fixed (thanks mom).  Thankfully this isn't one of our new couches, otherwise I would be furious.  Plus, as you may have noticed from a previous post, these couches are now at Ryan's college house, so I can only imagine what is in store for these poor things.
Hole in the carpet.  Sophie created this right after we moved in.  Needless to say, I was quite pissed off.  The only positive is our carpet is semi-shaggy, so you can push over the carpet around it and the hole basically disappears.  In fact, it took me a little while just to find the hole to photograph.
Our very expensive down comforter cover.  We don't usually sleep with this on our bed, but one night this winter it was really cold.  Bad mistake.  Miss Sophie left her mark.  And I should have first mentioned that we let our dogs sleep in our bed at night.  No need for comments, I already know what you will say - there is an easy answer to this problem!
Sheets.  In line with the last photo, we also have holes in every set of sheets we own and the 2 blankets we cover the bed with.  Do you see a pattern here?  Basically, Sophie likes to chew up bedding, and we will be sleeping in holey sheets until I know for certain that she won't get bored in the middle of the night and make a snack of our sheets.

So, if you stop by our house and happen to notice the holes, just know that we do not have extremely large moths, it's just the handy work of our dear Sophie.
Bathroom floor rugs.  Another one of her middle of the night adventures.  I get it, she sleeps all day and wants to party at night.  But seriously, it's really annoying.  This actually happened back in our townhome, but as with the sheets, I will not be purchasing anything new until I know this little habit is completely broken.
Carpet on the basement steps.  We've started trying to leave them out of their kennels more often when we will be gone for just a couple hours, so we block them off in the basement.  These spots have now been sprayed with our bitter apple spray and haven't been touched since.  It's hard to say whether this was done by Neeko or Sophie, but I'm willing to bet I know who was behind this.
Their toys.  This is normal for dogs, but thought I should include it just because the main toy she likes to chew on is Neeko's favorite - Pinky.  This name comes from Neeko's first toy (a pink stuffed dog) and has carried on from various new versions. Right now, Pinky is a blue dragon. Sophie doesn't chew up her own things, but everyone else's stuff is fair game.
I'm sure there are many more things she has chewed that I am forgetting.  I should mention that this bad habit has started to get better.  There is hope that one day I can sleep in sheets that don't look like swiss cheese.

  1. We had 2 carpet incidents but that is the extent of our dog's chewing. I wouldn't even know what to do about this problem. Good luck!

  2. HA! This post cracks me up! I must say, you are very calm about this whole situation. I would be freaking out and threatening getting rid of them if it didn't stop. I'm glad you are Neeko and Sophie's owner and not me:)

  3. Been there more times than I would like to admit! I was going to say try the bitter apple spray, but looks like you have. I'm also on the same page as you with not buying anything new until the chewing is done.. hopefully it's soon, we desperately need a new living room rug!
Oh and it's fine, Margo sleeps with us too :)
