Now back to the title of the post - Progress. As I'm sure everyone that still follows this blog knows, Matt was in a very serious bicycle accident at the end of February. Long story short (for those who don't know), Matt was on a ride around 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon. Came down a hill following a couple cars and some deer ran out into the road. The cars slammed on their brakes and Matt didn't have time to react, plus as you can imagine, bike brakes are definitely not as good as car brakes. He ended up hitting the back of the car in front of him, flew into the back window and shattered it. Then rolled off the side of the car. Most amazing part, he picked himself up and walked out of the street over to the sidewalk. His injuries could have been so much worse, and for that we are truly blessed.
His injuries included shattering his nose, a large gash down his face, severe cuts in his eyebrow and below his eye, 3 broken front teeth, a severe cut to his tongue, a large gash on his chest, and some other minor cuts on his face and knees that needed stitches. I believe the surgeon's response to "how many stitches did he get" was "a million". However, he has healed incredibly fast. So fast that it's hard to believe it's only been a little over a month since the accident. A big thank you for all the love and support through those first couple of weeks.
So, for the sake of showing his progress, I have to show the pictures. They might be too much for some of you so I apologize, but he's come a long way in such a short time!
He's looking even better today than this last photo!
As for updates on his continued recovery, especially for his nose and teeth - he had 3 root canals about a month ago and will get his caps in a couple of months. He has to wait a year for his nose reconstruction. They need his skin to heal more because the scar tissue is very tough right now and would be hard to work with. Plus, there are a few more factors like blood circulation, etc.
Bottom line, he's doing great and already has a race and lots of miles on his new bike. Geesh. It's crazy how much this man loves biking. He's nuts, but that's why I love him!
And one more thing - Congratulations to Julie and Josh on their new bundle of joy - Landon Michael Bowen! He was born on April 1st and is doing great. He is just perfect and such a sweet little boy. Weird to think that him and Carson Kutter will soon be running around the back yard together causing all sorts of trouble - can't wait!
